Margaret Hodson Obituary

Margaret Marie Brown Hodson 95, passed away May 26, 2017 in Lawrence. She was born to Margaret (Maggie) Ploughe Brown and Walter B. Brown on November 5, 1921 in Perry and lived there until moving to Brandon Woods in 2013. Memorial services will be held at the Perry United Methodist Church on Wednesday, May 31 at 11AM with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery at 10AM. Visitation is 6-8PM Tuesday at the Perry UMC. She graduated from the Perry Schools. In 1927, while in second grade, she became seriously ill with pneumonia, and attracted attention from all over the United States, having been the first person to receive oxygen to treat the illness. She recovered fully. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1943 with a degree in education. She taught home economics at Perry Rural High School from 1946 through 1949 and later substituted in the district for more than 25 years. She was married to Charles, Roger Hodson in Perry on January 17, 1943. They were married for 65 years until his death in 2008. Also preceding her in death were her brother, Marlin Brown and her sisters, Maurice Frandle, Meta Maichel, and Merna Hartman. Survivors include her children, Sherry (Terry) Weber of Topeka, Peggy (Doug) Griswold of Wichita, Chuck (Amy) Hodson of Topeka, and Janet (John) Macek of Shawnee, grandchildren, Mindy (Adam) Doyle, Molly Hodson, Jeff and Kevin Griswold, and Matthew Macek, and great grandchild, Harrison Doyle. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews and their families. She was a lifelong member of the Perry United Methodist Church, having served in many capacities, including president of the UMW, Sunday school teacher, and member of various committees. She was a charter member of the Civic Study Club, now in its 66th year, and a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Lioness club, Women's Christian Club, and Knife and Fork Club in Lawrence. She served as neighborhood chairman for the Girl Scouts in Perry. She was a member of the committee for Higher Learning at KU for many years and an avid KU sports fan, attending basketball games for over forty years. Margaret was an accomplished seamstress and homemaker, and enjoyed traveling throughout the US and overseas.
