James E. Salyer

Services for James "Jim" Edward Salyer, 76, Lawrence will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Private inurnment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. He died December 30, 2012 at his home.

He was born September 12, 1936 in Great Bend, KS the son of Wilbur Ancel and Sally Mae (Fox) Salyer.

He grew up in Larned, KS until he attended the University of Kansas. During high school he lettered in football until he injured his knee and was also a golfer on a two-man state championship team his senior year.

He married Joan Faye "JoAnn" Hohner on July 30, 1954 in Larned, Kansas. She preceded him in death on September 28, 2011.

The fall JoAnn and James got married they moved to Lawrence so he could attend KU Pharmacy School. He graduated pharmacy school in 1958. They then moved back to Larned where he worked in a local drug store for a short period of time. Then they moved to Freemont, NE where he worked a short time and then moved to Wichita, KS He eventually started Salyer Pharmacy in Wichita and operated that business until 1970 when he sold that business and moved back to Lawrence to attend Law School. He graduated from Law School in Feb. 1973 and thereafter, worked at Robert B. Oyler Law Firm. After Mr. Oyler retired, Jim operated the law firm until he retired in 2000. In addition to practicing law with Mr. Oyler, he purchased half interest in the Rankin Drug and Round Corner Drug and eventually the two drug stores merged and he had full ownership in Round Corner Drug. The drug store was sold in 1985.

He was a past member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, the Kansas Pharmaceutical Association, the Kansas Bar Association, the Kansas Bar Foundation, and the Douglas County Bar Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Jo Salyer (Kirby Price), Lawrence; a son, Dennis James (Peggy) Salyer, Lawrence; two grandchildren Lucas Houk and Taletha Jo (Owen) Lehmann, both of Lawrence; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in by death by his sister, Patricia Ann Onken formerly of McPherson, KS; and a son, James Patrick Salyer in 1978.

The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. until service time on Friday at the mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to the KU Endowment Association – School of Pharmacy or School of Law and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
