Ruth Belzer Obituary

Ruth Elaine Belzer, 92, of Lawrence, Kansas passed peacefully at Monterey Village surrounded by her family on Thursday, November 6, 2025.

Ruth was born on March 31, 1933, in Lovilia, Iowa, to James and Irene (Roberts) Bunch.

Ruth married Harold Belzer on September 29, 1967, in Lovilia, Iowa, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include her stepson, Jerry Belzer, grandchildren, Cindy Hawkins, Chelly (Bret) Sumner, J.D. Belzer, great-grandchildren, Jeanette Hawkins, Rebekah Hawkins, Zachary Sumner, Terrance Belzer, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth was also preceded in death by her parents, siblings Walter Bunch, George Bunch, Carol Belzer, Helen Baker, and Dorothy Cotter.

Ruth attended Albia High School where she played for the girl's basketball team. She enjoyed her career as a data processor and worked on one of the very first computers using a punch card.

Harold and Ruth loved playing music together with family and other band members. She sang, played the electric bass, and double bass.

Ruth was very proud of her volunteer work when she retired. She received the governor's award for Volunteer of the Year in Iowa several times. Ruth was an avid gardener and had many beautiful flower gardens over the years and many Yard of the Week recognitions. She also loved to read and spend time with her family and friends.

The family will have a private service in Lawrence. A funeral will be held in Albia, Iowa at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ruth's name may be given to Lawrence Humane Society or Visiting Nurses Association and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
