Rod Barnes Obituary

Rod Barnes was born on November 19, 1949. He thoroughly enjoyed 40 years of being a Family Practice Doctor here in Lawrence.

His life was full, and he lived each day with intention and great energy.

We will gather as friends informally at Venue 1235 (1235 N 3rd Street, Lawrence, KS 66044) on Friday, September 19 from 4-6p.m. Come by at any point to say hello.

No formal service and no long obituary are two of his requests.

He always was a very humble man.

Donations in Rod's memory may be made to Bert Nash or Just Foods and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary; 120 W 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Rod was a great mentor in my early years of practice, that listening and concern were key to being a great family doctor. A life well lived, Rod.

Dr Barnes was the absolute best doctor I have ever known. He was knowledgeable, had a great personality and he genuinely cared about me as a patient and person. He was my doctor for 31 years, for the first 7 years he didn´t know me or that he was my doctor. When I became ill and we finally met, he asked me how he became my doctor, I told him that I picked him out of the Yellow pages in 1986. We had a big laugh and he became my primary care physician, my friend and family. My condolences to Mary and the family. Rest on my friend, angels are made of people like you.

Dr. Rod Barnes worked with me once the practice became LMH's. He was always calm, courteous and contributed to the great spirit of the practice. He helped us know of Dr. Godwin's hobby of fly fishing when Dr.Godwin was retiring and we surprised him with a lot of fly fishing goods. He also hosted a practice picnic party at his home and proudly showed off his collection of antique toys. He was a gentle, professional man and I consider myself lucky to have known him. May all the family's good memories of him provide you peace.

Dr. Barnes was best example of a human being, ever. He was our family doctor and he not only provided medical care, but life care. So many fond memories over the years. Condolences to the family.

I do not live in Lawrence now and heard through a friend of Rod's passing. I found this is one of a few times when the written word fails. As my doctor for about 30 years, his absolutely genuine, warm, intelligent, caring and humorous demeanor simply made my life better just having known him. My sincere condolences to his family and friends, and thanks for the light he shared with others.
