Richard Smith Obituary

Richard K. "Dick" Smith, 84, of Lawrence, formerly of Hutchinson, died peacefully, with family by his side, Sept. 4, 2012 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Dick was born Mar. 28, 1928 at Larned, the son of Arthur K. & Kendal Cade Smith. He graduated from Johnson High School in 1946, and also graduated from Garden City Junior College in 1948.
Dick was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after many years of service, and had previously worked as an agent for National Life & Accident Insurance Company. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 A.F. & A.M., the York Rites, the Silver Leaf Chapter #464 Order of Eastern Star, all of Hutchinson. He was a Past Grand Patron of Kansas OES and belonged to the Midian Shrine in Wichita. Dick was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Dick married Georgia Anne House, the love of his life, on May 7, 1950 in Johnson City, Kansas. She died May 1, 2012. After living in Johnson for several years, Dick and Georgia eventually moved to Hutchinson where they were actively involved in the community, raised their family and made their home for many years. In 2000 they moved to Lawrence to be close to family, always a priority in his life. Survivors include: a son, Steve Smith; a daughter, Marsha Jones (Dr. David); a grandson, Greg Jones; a granddaughter,
Kristen Gill (Jarrod); and 2 great grandchildren, Treven and Kendel Gill, all of Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 brothers, Sheldon and Claire. He was the pillar of family strength, always offering a positive view of life. He was a man of honor, someone you could trust and someone to make you feel loved and safe. His ever-present smile and cheerful personality will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at Elliott Mortuary, with Karen Atkins presiding. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. I miss talking and laughing with you. I miss watching you carve and teaching me. I miss "Come in! Come in." I miss talking about the Army, Hutchinson, tomatoes, homemade icecream. You were the nicest, most positive person I have ever met. I will miss you Dick, always. ~Debbie Studer
