Margaret Barlow Obituary

Margaret Luella Barlow (Allee), at the age of 92 lost, her battle with cancer and walked lovingly into the arms of her Lord on the morning February 1st, 2021. Margaret was born in Hiawatha, KS on June 13, 1928. She was joined in Marriage to Alfred Barlow on May 27, 1950, and they welcomed three children: Bruce, Tobin and Amy.

Margaret graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1946. She received an Elementary Emergency Certificate in August of 1946 to fill a need for teachers. She began her career teaching in small Western Kansas schools that year. Despite receiving the emergency certificate to teach, Margaret continued her to pursue her degree in education, finally receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Education from KU in 1973. She taught several years at Morris Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas. She finished her teaching career in the Lawrence Public School District. She taught at India Elementary School, moving on to Kennedy Elementary School until she retired in 1989. She was fondly remembered by former students throughout the 30 years after her retirement, and she remembered all of them as well.

She was a devoted member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, an avid maker of beautiful quilts, a member of The Topeka Quilt Guild and The Kaw Valley Quilt Guild.

Margaret was the Grand Dame of the lovingly christened "Barlow family Compound" in North Lawrence. The compound encompasses four homes, a business (BKB Leather) and four Generations of family, where we annually host the Barlow Friends and Family Thanksgiving and the Capricorn Birthday Gathering.

Margaret is survived by her daughter Amy Barlow and husband Nathan Kramer of Omaha Nebraska. Her son Bruce Barlow and wife, Kris Barlow who was her daughter-in-law and best friend. She was Grandmama to her three loving grandchildren. Angela Barlow and her wife Kathryn Barlow, Austin Barlow, Zoe Smith and her husband Casey Smith. Last but certainly not least, by the light of her life, her two great-granddaughters Ebben Marie Smith and Ardis Luella Smith, all whom call the Barlow Compound home. A sister Ruth Plambeck of Santa Maria, California, a brother Mark Allee of Skokie, Illinois along and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband Alfred D Barlow, her brother Frank Allee, and this summer by her son Tobin Barlow, a victim of Covid.

We miss her deeply and are a bit lost without her. Godspeed dear one.

I'm so very sorry to hear about Mrs. Barlow's death. She was my home room teacher for both 5th and 6th grade at Kennedy Elementary. She was a great teacher for me and I extend my deepest sympathy to her family at this time. I didn't even realize that I knew her granddaughter, Zoe, in a totally different time in my own life. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

Our thoughts are with you - what a wonderful person to have shared your lives with. We feel so fortunate to have visited with Margaret in the summer and were completely amazed by her! She remembered us and our kids (!) even though it was over 30 years since she and Kim taught the sixth graders together at Kennedy. Margaret was a wonderful co-teacher and person and we were so glad to have known her.
