Lois Harrell Obituary

Memorial service for Lois E. Harrell, 97, Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church. The family will greet friends and relatives from 10:00 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. She died June 6, 2018 at her home.

She was born on August 27, 1920 in Lawrence, Kansas the daughter of Herbert and Anna Gustava (Behrens) Bailey. Lois married James M. Harrell, Sr. on September 21, 1941 in Lawrence, Kansas. He preceded her in death on Dec 29 1997.

Lois graduated from DeSoto High School and attended Lawrence Business College. She was a legal secretary for Forrest Jackson in Lawrence. After her marriage she became a wonderful mom, grandma and a homemaker for her large family. After her husband became disabled she worked for 15 years as a secretary for the Classics Department at KU. Lois was very active at Trinity Lutheran Church belonging to WELCA and the Historical committee. She was very involved in the Lawrence Garden Club.

Survivors include four daughters, Virginia Day (Keith), Lawrence; Joanna Long, Lecompton KS; Joyce Harrell (Rodger Sunderland) Silver Spring MD; Pam Harrell (Kris Bailey) Lawrence; two sons, James Marion Harrell JR. (Beka), Lawrence; Michael Harrell (Julie), Independence MO; 12 grandchildren, 21 great -grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two brothers Edwin Bailey and Loren Bailey, one sister Vera (Bailey) Dunn; Son-in-law Martin S. Long, Granddaughter Dakota Copp, and Great Granddaughter Mhari Rowell

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to KU Classics Department through KU Endowment or Trinity Lutheran Church and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Lois was one of the finest human being I ever knew. As our secretary in the Classics Deot,she was loved and respected by us all, and we were a diverse and sometimes fractious group. She was devoted to her ever-growing family. Never pretentious she was the kind and intelligent woman all can see in the lovely photo..
