I was Leland's primary caregiver through Trinity In-home Care from Dec 2022 until Jul 2025 when his health took a downturn, and his family came to Lawrence to oversee his care. Leland was an interesting man who had a more than interesting life. While he was generally a quiet man, when we talked, we talked about a lot of things including his time in England during WWII, WWII itself, his work in the grocery business, Concordia, and, of course, Westerns which were always on TV when I was there. He refused to watch anything else. He adored John Wayne, Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart and was a voracious reader of biographies and historical non-fiction; I ordered library books for him on a regular basis. He and I both quizzed each other of the names of the stars of various programs and movies, and he often won! We walked nearly every day for the first year and a half around the block and to lunch across the street at Arbor Court where we both made many good friends and acquaintances. It was our social life. As time went on, he was less active and became more tired so we were walking and talking less. I asked him several months before his death whether he wanted to continue walking across the street and his response to me was: "I don't want to give up." That is how I believe Leland led his life, especially in his final months. My friendship with Leland and his family are a part of my fondest memories, and I will miss them for the rest of my life. Leland was a true friend, and I was privileged to have helped with his care and companionship in the last years of his life. I miss Leland every single day,

I didn't have the privilege of knowing this man. After reading about his life and smiling through the entire memories.
I wish I could have known him.

A fond farewell to Leland! I was privileged to live next door to them on Parkview Ct in Lawrence many years ago, and they were the very best neighbors one could ever have. I once brought him a mug from Leland, Michigan, which gave them a laugh. :-) Leland and Bernita were around when my kids were born and as I coped with the sudden and devastating loss of a close friend, and I will never forget their kindness and consideration. They were always so proud of their kids and grandkids and loved to share little tidbits about their lives. The last time I saw Leland was downtown Lawrence, when we caught up a bit and shared a hug. My warmest condolences to the family--you hit the parental and grandparental jackpot, and I'm sure you know it!
