From my son Derek: I was saddened to learn of the passing of my elementary school principal Mr. Stauffer. I think he was the first person who I truly respected, before I even knew what respect was. I got into trouble a lot in my youth, which meant numerous trips to the principal's office for a stern talking to. I respected him then because he demanded it and I was afraid of him, but I respect him now because I know that he devoted his life to educating and mentoring youth, which is perhaps the greatest gift a person can give. I hadn't seen him for many years until I saw him at my great grandmother's 90th birthday celebration in Lecompton in 2013. I wish I had told him what an impact he had on my life, because I wouldn't be the person I am today if it wasn't for him. I still remember his retirement celebration at Schwegler when the entire student body surprised him by singing "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong. The world is wonderful because of people like Mr. Stauffer. Rest in Peace.
