I only recently learned of the death of Dan Merriam in Lawrence KS recently, although he died 26 April 2017. Dan & I were fellow graduate students in geology at KU from 1959-1962 & had many good times together, especially on field trips. Please extend my condolences to his family.

I'll remember our walks and talks and bon vivant companionship on the Colorado River down the Grand Canyon. Dan knew the strata all the way down to the Precambrian.

Annie and family: I greatly enjoyed working with Dan during my 8 years at the Kansas Geological Survey. He was a wonderfully supportive, kind, and encouraging colleague whose keen sense of humor made every conversation enjoyable. I'm sorry for your loss and regret not being able to attend his funeral and celebrate his wonderful life.

On behalf of the Department of Earth Sciences at Syracuse University, we are so sorry to hear about Dan's passing. He served SU in outstanding fashion as Chair and Professor before he left for other positions. Dan his family's continual support of our students through their family scholarship award remains one of the finest things we can do for one of our students every year, and will continue to be a legacy that Dan would be proud of. On a personal note, I got to know Dan after he left through seeing him at conferences and other affairs. He was a gentleman and a fine scholar who brought mathematical applications to the Earth Sciences at a time when the profession needed a jump start to the new science being done with computing. I will miss him greatly.
