Allan Madden Obituary

The Rev. Allan Robert Madden

The Rev. Allan R. Madden returned to his heavenly home on December 17, 2014, at the age of 88. He passed away with family present in his home, Lawrence, Kansas.

Memorial services for Allan are scheduled for Saturday, December 20, at 2:00PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, Lawrence, Kansas. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Allan's life. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vermont Street, Lawrence, KS 66044. Condolences can be emailed to [email protected].

Allan is survived by his wife, Marolyn Madden of Wichita, KS; children, A. Robert Madden and wife Deann of Broken Arrow, OK, John R. Madden and wife Teresa of McPherson, KS, and Anne Madden Johnson and husband Kelly of Lawrence, KS; nephew, James Madden of Houston, TX; and grandchildren, Emily and Trevor Johnson. He is preceded in death by wife, Ruth Eaton; grandson, Logan Madden; brothers, William Madden and Henry Madden, and his parents, Ruth and Hugh Madden.

Allan was born on May 17, 1926, in Galveston, TX to Hugh Logan and Ruth Emily LeWald Madden. He grew up in southern Texas, and held several occupations, including working on his father's tugboat, and as a racetrack photographer with his brother, Bill. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, and owned several Harley Davidsons. He was a proud Navy veteran, and served our country during WWII and Korea. He married Gwendolyn Joann Ayers on August 9, 1949, and was later blessed with three children, Robert, John, and Anne. He graduated from Baylor University in Waco, TX, in 1951 with a BA in Chemistry. He later graduated from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, TX, in 1963 with a Masters of Divinity. He was later ordained as an Episcopal priest in Navasota, TX, in 1964. His passion in serving his Lord for 50 years gave him many opportunities to spread the Gospel in many locations and congregations throughout Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. He ultimately settled in Lawrence, Kansas, and was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, and enjoyed visits with his grandchildren.

Allan was an avid stamp collector, and often shared his enthusiasm with his grandchildren. He was also very interested in the theater and performed in many plays over the course of his life. He was witty and enjoyed conversation and joking with others, and had a generous spirit, giving to many charities. He was a proud Texan, an active Democrat, and had a heart of gold, never seeing the bad in others. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Madden Family,
I am saddened by your loss, but know that God will comfort you as only He can at this time. I met Fr. Madden in Nacogdoches and was impressed with his generous heart, love of the Church and God's people, as well as being an avid history buff...never missed a historic marker.
My prayers are with you,

My thoughts and prayers go out to you on the death of your father, Allan. We first met a good number of years ago at aa church conference in Amarillo. Our paths crossed again in 1996 while serving as interim at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church InHouston while interim priest there. He helped out at the church on several occasions. People at St. Barnabas thought highly him. He was a good friend and a fine pastor.

I had the opportunity to meet Allan when I facilitated a group of Episcopalian priest. Even though he was officially retired at the time he was very involved. He was a kind and caring man who loved his church. I am thankful our paths crossed.

My deepest condolences to the Madden Family for the loss of a husband and father. He was such an interesting person to converse with and a wonderful sense of humor. He and I shared many early childhood memories of growing up in the Houston-Galveston area during the 40-60's. He was a dedicated and respected Priest of the Episcopal Church. He will be sorely missed among the masses. My prayers go out to the family.

We are saddened by your loss. Allan was always a delight to be around. We knew him when he was in Houston. It is never easy to lose a parent, especially around the holidays, but remember this ~ he will always be in your heart and therefore, is never far away. May God be with you as you journey through your grief.
