Gary Simes Obituary

Gary Noble Simes passed peacefully into heaven on Friday, January 30. He was born August 11, 1935 in Mott, ND (on his fathers' birthday) to Kenneth Eugene and Laveta Acklin Simes. The family lived in Seattle while his dad was in the service, then moved to Winston-Salem. Gary graduated from RJ Reynolds High School, served in the Army in Korea, and attended Wake Forest University. He spent his career as an Insurance Adjustor with a short detour as a body shop manager.

Gary became a charter member of Highland Presbyterian Church at 14, and faithfully served in many roles. He taught his family that faith is the foundation that celebrates in the good times and holds us in the bad.

Gary loved to spend time with his family and friends at Lake Norman, going on boat rides, fishing with his grandkids, and with his wife, teaching an untold number of people to waterski, He also enjoyed going to Holden Beach with the Wrights, Hills and Prestons and taking family vacations to Emerald Isle with his kids and grandkids. There was always much love and laughter.

Left to cherish Gary's memory are his wife of 67 years Carol; his children Chris (Amy) Simes, Allison Meadows, Wendy (Greg) Murphy and Troy (Nita) Simes; his grandkids Garrett (Mary) Simes, Colin Simes, Parker (Elizabeth) Murphy, Matt Murphy, Caroline Murphy, Emily Meadows, Shelby Meadows and Brianna Simes; and his great-grandson Hudson Simes.

A celebration of life will be held at Highland Presbyterian Church March 7 at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Highland Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or Second Harvest Food Bank.

My parents, Mary and Poe Eskridge were charter members of Highland and the church I grew up attending. Even as a young boy, I can remember Gary and Carol being active at church. My mother thought it would be beneficial for me to go to their home and over several meetings, Gary served as a mentor and discipled me as a pre-teen. Gary was probably in his late 20's or early 30's. Of course the details are "fuzzy" now many years later but I always will remember the warmth and friendship of being in their home. Prayers for Carol and their family. One day....a great reunion!
