I remember meeting brother Dick for the first time on the porch of our home as he came home from the hospital on a summer day wrapped in a blanket. During that year of 1945 my oldest brother, Skip (Raymond,Jr,), kept a diary, and I remember the entry he wrote at the birth of our youngest brother, Richard. As I remember, he simply wrote: " We have a baby brother. We are going to call him Dickie."
Though I was about 7 years older than Dick the years of childhood activities together are not forgotten nor the family gatherings of the adult years. I am thankful for my brother Dick who God in His wisdom took from us on our Mother's birthday. " We will miss him. There will be an empty chair." But he will still be here and active in our hearts and minds, as we remember that the death of the body is not the end, but a new beginning.

your story is here to stay
four degrees out, but it feels like negative ten -
the birds are silent, but the sun rose well again
above the trees on the hill which you were raised,
adorned with stonewalls and fields of frosted glaze.
the bleak midwinter has ushered you away,
but like the sunrise your story is here to stay.
this morning’s peach and purple hues remind
how oft we wish our lives we could rewind.
your subtle smile and quiet presence were
like the pleasantness of the hardy balsam fir
standing on the edge of a woodland stream;
your roots run deep, but my memories are dreams
of wishing I could stand with you once more
beside the trees, upon the forest floor
of Dana Hill - on the Hollow Road’s worn trail
I will see your face, know your presence on this vale.
in honor and memory of “Uncle” Richard G. Smith
