Mary Appel Obituary

Mary Jane "Shane" Appel, born Mary Jane Glover, 77, of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 30, 2026. She was born on May 13, 1948, in Pittsburgh, to Thomas Lees and Mary Jane Glover. Throughout her life, Shane was known for her compassion and care, along with a playful sense of mischief that often showed up in the form of lighthearted pranks. She loved rooting for the underdog and believed deeply in the rights and dignity of all people. She adored animals, and her chocolate chip cookies were legendary. She is survived by her children, Jennifer Kemp (Jon), Sean Appel, Bryan Appel (Caro), Nathan Appel (Kelly), and Geoffrey Appel; her grandchildren, Jaime (Greg), Allen, Ryan, Sofia, Beatrix, and Juniper; and her brothers, Terry (preceded in death by his wife, Debbie), Paul (preceded in death by his wife, Linda), John Peter (Mary Ann), Pat (Jody), and the late Tom. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Shane was happiest when surrounded by her family, and she left this world loving them all. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES LTD., 5864 Heckert Road, BAKERSTOWN, PA 15007. A private family service will be held to honor her life, with interment at Allegheny Cemetery. The family wishes to express special gratitude to the staff at St. Barnabas, who cared for her with such compassion throughout her final weeks.
