Born on Feb. 25, 1935, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Louis R. and Georgia L. Laughead. Catherine's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, faith, and a passion for education. Catherine was a longtime and faithful member of the Center Bethel Church of God, Alverton. Catherine's journey began as a bright-eyed graduate from East Huntingdon High School in 1953, where she laid the groundwork for her future endeavors. Her academic pursuits took her to Finley University, where in 1957 she earned her teaching degree, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to nurturing young minds. Catherine's teaching career started at Hempfield High School, where for five years she dedicated herself to the growth and development of first-grade students. Her passion for early education led her to the Scottdale YMCA, where she served as a teacher and director of the Y Tots program for 21 years. Her pioneering spirit was instrumental in establishing the Y Tots Program, enriching the lives of countless children and families in the surrounding areas. Catherine's love story with her beloved husband, Nicholas Ritz of Scottdale, began on Nov. 28, 1957, and it was a partnership filled with mutual respect, devotion, and joy. Together, they raised a family that included their children, Jeffrey A. Ritz of Ruffsdale, Jana L. Rago; and her husband, Vincent of California; and Jolene L. Cummins of Ruffsdale; as well as the late Jerald A. Ritz. Her life was further blessed with the laughter and love of her grandchildren, Andrew and Tara Ritz; Kaylee, Julia, and Austin Cummins; and Phillip and Elise Rago. Catherine's family circle included her cherished sister, Dolores B. Miller of Georgia, who shared in the many joys and sorrows of life. She was preceded in death by her brother, Louis R. Quartz, Jr., who passed away in 2012; and she also endured the loss of her son, Jerald Ritz, in 1983; son-in-law, Joseph Cummins, in 2016; and her daughter-in-law, Neva J. Ritz, in 2023. In her spare time, Catherine's creativity blossomed through her love of sewing. She took delight in making dolls and crafting exquisite clothing for them, a hobby that reflected her meticulous care and attention to detail. Those who knew Catherine will remember her as a loving and faith-filled woman who approached every endeavor with a passionate heart. In honoring Catherine's wishes, there will be no visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at a later time at the convenience of the family.
