Janice Nilsen Obituary

Janice Marie Nilsen of Hannaford, ND passed away on February 5, 2025.
Funeral services will be held at a later date.
Janice was born on May 31, 1940 in Valley City, ND to Leth and Edna (Nelson) Anderson. She was raised on her family's farm near Eastedge, ND. Janice was a graduate of Nome High School and carried the pride of her school throughout her life by being an active member of the NHS Alumni Association.
She married her high school sweetheart, Roger Nilsen, on September 19, 1958. They made Hannaford their home and were active members within the community, particularly Faith Lutheran Church. Later in life, they became winter Texans and made many special friends. They enjoyed traveling. Some of their most memorable trips were to Australia, New Zealand, and Alaska.
Janice enjoyed taking pictures, sewing and baking. One thing she was known for were her delicious buns. She took pleasure in passing this tradition down through the generations. Janice loved sharing stories and spending time with friends and family. She hapd a gift for gab. According to Roger, Janice could dial a wrong number and talk for a half-an-hour. She will be remembered for her welcoming personality and quick laugh.
She is survived by her spouse of 66 years, Roger; son, Timothy (Denise) Nilsen of New Salem; daughter, Brenda (Tom) Smargiassi of Pearl City Il; grandchildren, Danyal (Lucas) Kafer, Heidi (Tanner) Avelsgard, Monte (LaiKyn) Nilsen, John (Jenna) Nilsen, Bryant Smargiassi, Braden Smargiassi, Brock Smargiassi; seven great-grandchildren; a friend she considered a sister, Elouise Nelson; sisters-in-law, Janice Plecity, Barbara (Curtis) Roberts and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by son, David; parents, Leth and Edna (Nelson) Anderson; brother, Earl ; sisters, Helen Ann Storhoff and Lois Ritter; brothers-in-law, Duane Plecity, Jerome Ritter, and Howard Storhoff.
