Mary Whitson Obituary

BRYSON CITY - Mary Etta Whitson, 78, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025. Born Sept. 16, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Edward and Alma Birdell Postell Mehaffey. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ronnie Mehaffey of Robbinsville and Joe Mehaffey of Mars Hill; as well as sister, Margie Sue, of Robbinsville.
Mary was born and raised in Robbinsville, graduating from Robbinsville High School in 1965. She met and married the love of her life, Travis, in 1973. Mary loved camping, fishing and was an avid bingo player. She enjoyed raising her two kids, cooking from scratch and taking care of the home; especially during hard times such as military deployments.
Mary is survived by her husband, Travis Whitson; son, Trevor of Charlotte; daughter, Tressa of Swannanoa; sisters, Leuna (Michael) Angell of Richmond, Virginia, Kay (Robert) Orr of Robbinsville and Sereita (Keith) Powers of Richmond, Virginia; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 12 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 4, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville. The family received friends and loved ones one hour prior to the service for visitation. Reverend Jody Griffin of Spruce Pine officiated. A private family burial was held in Burnsville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children Hospital at 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105.
Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is respectfully serving the Whitson family.
