Virginia Hunter Obituary

Virginia Elizabeth Hunter

July 17, 1931 - November 7, 2024

Newark, New Jersey - Heaven welcomed a beautiful angel on November 7th. Virginia (Ginny) Elizabeth Hunter, born in Newark, New Jersey on July 17, 1931, joined her loving husband Bob, devoted daughter, Leslie, parents Fred and Helen Colclough and many others who cherished and admired her dedication and love for her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and scores of admiring friends.

She met every challenge with fierce determination, powered by love and dedication. When her husband contracted polio on his 24th birthday, leaving him a quadriplegic. She also was 24 and they had two children, Bob Jr. and Leslie, both infants. Her greatest challenge began.

With children in tow, she literally pushed him in his wheelchair to success. He graduated magna cum laude, was a member of seven honor societies and was the first Woodrow Wilson Scholar at the University of Miami. He couldn't have accomplished this without her strength, love, guidance and tenacity. He then became a counseling psychologist, a professor, a chairman and a dean. They were a team. They defined each other.

Along the way, Ginny gave birth to two more children: Robyn and Logan. They built a beautiful home in South Miami and were adored by their neighbors and colleagues. They also famously hosted amazing Halloween Parties! She also created an incredible Dickens Village beneath her Christmas tree every year. It took weeks to construct. The family travelled the world. Nothing stopped them. But she wasn't finished! She decided to go back to school and earned a bachelors (with honors), a master's degree and taught special education for 15 years. She and her husband also were world-renown breeders of champion Persians. Their cattery was called "Catalot," with cats named Count, Quest and Dulcinea, to name a few.

With the 'cat business' behind her and the passing of her husband in 2000, she decided to join Delta Kappa Gamma, an international professional society for women educators. Never satisfied to just 'join,' she became a cherished leader over many years, earning the organization's highest honors and universal respect.

Ginny is survived by her son Bob Jr. and wife Susan, her daughter Robyn and husband Larry, her son Logan, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She also is warmly remembered by scores of students, who credit her for nurturing their academic 'beginnings' and lifelong success. A celebration of her life will be held during the Christmas Holidays, when family and friends, from across the country, can attend. Updates will appear on our Ginny Hunter Tribute Facebook Page.
