Richard Steven "Dick" Sweet

May 18, 1941 - March 4, 2025

Indian Land, South Carolina - Richard Steven"Dick" Sweet was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1941. The only child of Eugene and Eve Sweet, he graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk before attending Lehigh University. In 1966, he became the first member of his family to graduate law school, obtaining a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia. After serving in the Coast Guard during the Vietnam War, he lived in Washington, DC and obtained an LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University.

In 1970, Dick marriedJudithSiegel, and they had two sons, David and Mark. After Judy tragically passed in 1982, Dick raised his two sons, later remarrying.

An international tax lawyer, Dick held corporate roles in Pittsburgh, Winston-Salem, Atlanta, and London before returning to Charlotte in the early 1990s. There, he continued practicing law at Moore & Van Allen until his retirement, after which he moved to Sun City Carolina Lakes in South Carolina.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Dick passed away on March 4, 2025. He is survived by his two sons, his daughters-in-law Lindsay and Kathryn, and five grandchildren, Sam, Alex, Harper, Hadley, and Ellie. Dick will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

A graveside service was held at Mt. Sinai Cemetery in Winston-Salem on March 6, 2025. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation in support of the Atrium Health Foundation Sandra Levine Young Women's Breast Cancer Fund.

Dick and Judy and my late wife Leslie and I enjoyed getting together whenever the Sweets came to Norfolk to visit Eugene and Eve. I am so sorry to learn of his passing, and I extend deepest sympathy to David and Mark and their families.
