Harper Barnes Obituary

Harper Henderson Barnes - journalist, author, cultural critic, and a man deeply loved by all who knew him - died on February 19, 2026. He was 88. To his family, he was a devoted husband, a cherished uncle and great-uncle, a steadfast brother-in-law, and a dear friend to many. He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Roseann Weiss; his sister, June Barnes Rouse; and an extended family who will miss him deeply. Born in North Carolina near Chapel Hill, Harper described himself as a "pretty lonely kid" who found solace in reading which was a habit that blossomed into a distinguished career in journalism.

After editing the Boston Phoenix and writing for The Real Paper in Boston, Harper joined the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in the 1980s, where he spent more than 25 years as critic, Critic at Large, and features director. He wrote about culture, books, film, and civic life with an elegance his colleagues described as a defining intellectual force in the newsroom. His work appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic Monthly, and Rolling Stone. As an author, his biography of Missouri statesman David R. Francis, Standing on a Volcano, won the 2002 Missouri History Book Award, and his novel Blue Monday brought the jazz world of 1930s Kansas City vividly to life.

His most enduring work, Never Been a Time: The 1917 Race Riot That Sparked the Civil Rights Movement, stands as a testament to his lifelong belief that journalism and history, done with honesty and care, can illuminate the injustices that societies prefer to forget. Named Best Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2008 by an international narrative nonfiction journal, it is recognized as an authoritative work on American racial history. Harper Barnes gave us stories that needed to be told. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable mind, but for his warmth, his wit, and the love he brought to everyone fortunate enough to know him. A memorial will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to The Mission Project (themissionproject.org) and Bread and Roses Missouri (breadandrosesmo.org).
