Richard Barranco Obituary

Richard Barranco passed away on February 3, 2026. He was born on July 15, 1955, in Staten Island, New York, to Anne and Richard Coyle, and was raised in Brooklyn. He loved nothing more than telling a good "growing up in Brooklyn" story whenever he had the chance.
Our dad lived a life full of twists and turns. At just 17 years old, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War. His wardrobe proudly reflected that chapter of his life-nearly every shirt and hat bore the Marine Corps logo, which conveniently made birthday shopping easy each year. His service was one of his proudest accomplishments, and he wore that pride openly.
He later met his wife, Terry, at work. Determined to win her over, he left romantic Post-it notes on her desk-an effort that eventually paid off. Together, Richie and Terry built a life and raised two daughters, something he considered among his greatest achievements.
It would be impossible not to mention that our dad was a survivor in every sense of the word. Life challenged him again and again, yet he always found his way through. In 2006, he was given a cancer diagnosis and told he had six months to live. True to form, he decided he wasn't going anywhere-and proved them wrong for nearly 20 more years. While his diagnosis and recovery brought ongoing challenges, his perseverance never wavered.
His favorite thing in the world was spending time with his daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. It didn't matter what we were doing-he was happiest simply being with us, as long as he could step away for a cigarette break ("Smoke 'em if you got 'em!"). Another favorite pastime was scrolling through the obituaries to see just how many people he had outlived. (Look, Dad-you made it!)
Our dad was loving, brilliant, sarcastic, blunt, and steadfast in his ways. He never sugarcoated anything. He was unapologetically himself, no matter what anyone thought-and that was one of the things we loved most about him.
He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a love that cannot be replaced. His presence will be missed dearly, but his impact will remain with us always. To our loving dad and poppy, may you rest peacefully.
