Karen Hurley Obituary

Karen Wood Hurley

TAMPA, Fla. - Karen Wood Hurley, age 56, of Tampa, passed away unexpectedly Friday (Dec. 20, 2024).

Born Jan. 30, 1968, Karen was a proud graduate of Allegany (N.Y.) Central School, Class of 1986, and earned her degree in accounting from Niagara University in 1990.

Karen had a distinguished career in the employee stock ownership and retirement plan communities and most recently was the co-founder of Scruff Squad. She previously worked as a senior consultant at Blue Ridge Associates, SES Advisors and FuturePlan. Her knowledge, passion, and commitment to her clients earned her the admiration of colleagues and clients alike.

She was a member of The American Legion Auxiliary Town and Country Unit 152, Karen was an active participant in her community, offering her time and support to various causes close to her heart.

Known for her kind spirit, generosity and her love of sports, Karen was an enthusiastic fan of the Buffalo Sabres, Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees. Her passion for her teams was contagious, and she shared that love with family and friends.

Karen's devotion to her family was unmatched. She is survived by her partner, Manny Cardozo, with whom she shared many cherished years. She was a loving stepmother to Manuel, Sarah, Benjamin and Hannah; and a proud step-grandmother to Avery, Akyla, Gabriel, Elijah, Amara, Emy and Millie. Karen was the loving daughter of Archie and Judith (Anderson) Wood; and the beloved sister of Kathleen (Clifford) Wood Jones, Jeffrey (Jemma) Wood and Kimberly (Ricci) Wood DeLoriea. She was also a special aunt to Justin (Shannon) Wood, Katelyn (Brandon) Jones LaField, Ryan Wood, Eric (Darianne) DeLoriea, Kevin Jones and Jacob DeLoriea.

Karen was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Charles and Maxine Hurd Anderson; and her paternal grandparents, Archie and Beatrice Lewis Wood Sr. She was also preceded in death by her beloved pets, Gracie and Bailey; and is survived by her loyal companions, Buddy and Sam, who brought her joy and comfort.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Tampa and Allegany at a later date, where family and friends will come together to honor Karen's memory and celebrate the impact she had on all their lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Karen's memory to the American Diabetes Association and/or CompassionKind.org (dog rescue), both causes close to her heart.

Karen will be deeply missed, but her memory, kindness and love for her family, friends and animals will live on in all who knew her.

To Karens family, I'm so sorry for your loss. I am sending you all my love and support.
Karen was my stepmother and my friend, even after her and my dad separated. She has never failed to be there when I needed her. She was full of love, creativity and so much style and grace. She had the best ideas and always made everything she did look beautiful. Karen showed me how to straighten my hair for the first time when I was little, sitting me on the bathroom sink and patiently helping me for at least an hour. She helped me to pick out clothes that made me feel like a princess. Our vacations to the beach and New York with her family are some of my best childhood memories. Even when she moved to another state, she always made sure to check in on me and my boys.
I will forever remember her in my heart and cherish the time we had together. Thank you Karen, for everything

My deepest sympathy to Karen's family and friends. I met her thru my husband Keith's work blue ridge years ago. In just a few social gatherings I knew immediately what an amazing person she was. So friendly attractive smart and really fun. Her humor was unmatched. She loved her dogs. She loved her family. Absolutely one of a kind and I'm blessed she crossed my path. I am so sorry. Such a tremendous loss. Love Mary teeter mechanicsville va
