James W. 'Jim' Buchanan Jr.
Born: March 22, 1959
Died: February 28, 2026
James W. "Jim" Buchanan Jr., 66, of Crystal Lake, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday evening, February 28, 2026, at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital in McHenry.
Jim was born in Elgin on March 22, 1959, one of three children born to the late James W. Sr. and June (née Wagner) Buchanan. Growing up in Carpentersville, Jim naturally stepped into his role as big brother – protective, steady, and always ready with guidance or a laugh. He graduated from H.D. Jacobs High School in 1977, carrying with him friendships and values that would shape the rest of his life.
Faith was a cornerstone of Jim's life. A lifelong Missouri Synod Lutheran, he was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Carpentersville, where he also shared his love of music as a choir member for many years. He later worshiped at St. John's Lutheran Church in Algonquin and recently started attending Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake. His faith grounded him, guided him, and was reflected in the kindness and generosity he showed to others every day.
Jim dedicated his entire professional life to retail management, a field perfectly suited to his outgoing nature and natural leadership. For the past 20 years, he was a loyal and valued member of the Meijer Food Stores family. He didn't just manage stores - he built relationships. Jim believed in treating coworkers and customers alike with respect, patience, and a sense of humor that could brighten even the busiest day.
To know Jim was to know someone with a truly larger-than-life personality. He had a booming laugh, a quick wit, and an open heart. He was the person you could call when you needed advice, a helping hand, or simply someone to listen. Loyal to the core, Jim treasured his friendships and remained a steady, dependable presence in the lives of so many.
Above all, Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He shared 25 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Laura, whom he married on April 1, 2000 – a date that perfectly matched his playful spirit. Together, they built a life centered on love, family, and unwavering support for their six children: Amanda (Nick) Buck, Tiffany (fiancée Crystal Hernandez) Buchanan, Michael (Julie) Kettler, Andrew Buchanan, Nicholas Kettler, and Katelyn Kettler. His grandchildren – Rowan, Ryker, Lily, and Korra – were his pride and joy. He spoke of them often and with great pride, celebrating every accomplishment and milestone. Being "Grandpa" was one of the roles he cherished most. Jim is also survived by his brother, David (Tonia) Buchanan; his former sister-in-law and dear friend, Susan Buchanan Bullard; several nieces and nephews; and countless faithful friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Julie Ann Dixon Buchanan, who passed on November 5, 1996; and his sister, Linda Buchanan.
At Jim's request, he will be cremated, and his inurnment will be private.
A memorial visitation will be held at Miller Funeral Home in West Dundee on Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 2 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 5 p.m., officiated by Rev. Larry Rubeck.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jim's name may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation or the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.
Jim's life was defined by faith, family, friendship, and a heart that was always open to others. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
