Donald Calcagnini Obituary

Donald Peter Calcagnini
Donald Peter Calcagnini, 90, formerly of North Palm Beach, FL, and Branford, CT, passed away, with his family by his side, at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, CT, on Tuesday, January 21, 2026.
Born in Massapequa, NY, on September 17, 1937, Donald was the son of the late Arthur and Blanche Calcagnini. He was the devoted husband for 64 years of the late Joyce Walsh Calcagnini; father of James (deceased)(Deanne), Thomas (Cecilia) and Elise Calcagnini Palumbo (Ronald, deceased). He was the adored grandfather of Bianca, Addison, Donald, James, Nicole and Camille; and great-grandfather of Rowan and Hudson. He was predeceased by his brother, Arthur B. Calcagnini, Jr.; and is survived by his sister, Lola Hartman.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Notre Dame in 1958. After serving as an infantry officer in the military, he completed his Master of Business Administration at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1962.
Donald had a long and distinguished career in financial services, which began at Chase Manhattan Bank in NYC. In 1964, at 28 years old, he founded Hamden National Bank, which later became American National Bank, Lafayette American Bank, Hudson United Bank and, ultimately, TD Bank in 2006.
He was a passionate supporter of institutions of higher education, particularly his alma matter, University of Notre Dame and Quinnipiac University, where he received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in 2008. He was a member of the Quinnipiac University Board of Trustees for more than 20 years, served as chairman of the board of their endowment fund and was elected to their business school Hall of Fame.
An active member of all his communities, Donald was involved with numerous organizations. He served as president of the Lost Tree Club and a team captain of the Lost Tree Foundation. He served as president of the board of the Hospital of St. Raphael, the United Way and the One Hundred Club of Connecticut and was a member of the Young Presidents' Organization. Among his numerous accolades and distinctions, he was awarded by Pope Paul VI the Knights of Saint Gregory Papal Award for exemplary service as a Catholic layperson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 28, at 10 am at St. Mary Church (St. John Bosco Parish), 731 Main Street, in Branford, followed by private interment at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Calcagnini ALS Foundation - a charity close to Donald's heart, https://www.calcagninialsfoundation.org/donate .
