Sue Ellen James, 80, of Mishawaka stepped into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Thursday, March 13, 2025, with family by her side. She was born on July 9, 1944, in Cleveland, OH, to the late Charles N. and Mary M. (Miller) Berry, and later married Kenneth Lee James in Niles, MI, on April 15, 1963.

She is survived by her husband Ken and their children Tamela “Tammi” (Ronald) Post of Mishawaka, Diana (Michael) Durrill of Brighton, CO, Anne (Brian) Smith of Romulus, MI, Kimberly James, of South Bend, and Donna (Kamal) Ahmed of Framingham, MA, as well as 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Teresa Lynn James, and her siblings, Charles JR and William Berry, Jeanette Pokrandt, Mary Alice Jester, and Jane Noe.

For 23 years, Sue and Ken served faithfully as full-time missionaries in the jungles of Bangladesh, dedicating their lives to their calling. Sue also served as Director of Heart House, a mission educating and employing widowed Bangladeshi women, offering them hope and independence. Ken and Sue’s love for ministry began years earlier when they first opened their hearts and home to foster children in Mishawaka. Over the years, they provided love, stability, and guidance to over 50 children both here in the US and in Bangladesh.

As a faithful, committed member of First Baptist Church in Mishawaka, Sue served in numerous capacities and on various committees, and loved ensuring that grieving families were cared for by using her gift of hospitality in the preparation of meals for funeral services. Her heart for service was evident in all she did.

Sue was known for hosting large garage sales that brought the community together, forming lasting bonds with people of all ages. Whether in Bangladesh, her home, or her church, Sue lived a life of faith and generosity. She found joy in family and friendships and found her hope in the Lord.

A time to honor her life and visit with family and friends is scheduled for Friday, March 21 from 4-8pm at First Baptist Church, Mishawaka. A service will be held the following day, Saturday, March 22 at 10:30, with an hour visitation prior to services and a luncheon immediately following the service. A private family burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider making a memorial contribution to Sarah Anne Adoption Agency, Ambassador’s Football (Support for Joseph & Kimberly Frerichs), or First Baptist Church, Mishawaka.
