Jean Spencer Obituary

Jean Sowell Spencer, born May 9, 1949, in Dothan, Alabama, passed away on January 9, 2026.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Sara Sowell and Denny Sowell, who lived in Birmingham, Alabama.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jim Spencer; her daughter, Jeanette Newland; her granddaughters, Jordan Reed (husband Tyler Reed) and Jenna Clopp; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Jaxon Reed, Thea Reed, and Presley Massie.

Jean attended The University of Alabama, where she met the love of her life, Jim Spencer. She later earned her Master's Degree from The University of Texas at Dallas and devoted 25 years of service to the City of Plano.

She had a generous heart and gave her time freely, volunteering with Kids Count Players, the Plano ISD Mentor Program, Dallas ISD, CASA of Plano, the youth program at Christ United Methodist Church, and the Ladies of the Legacy Willow Bend Knitting Group. Jean was an active member of the Family Living Class at Christ United Methodist Church since 1978 and a proud member of The Terrace Chics at Highland Springs Retirement Community.

Jean loved writing and faithfully shared her weekly email, Letters from a Snuggery, with an audience of 65 readers for nearly 20 years. She was known for her sharp sense of humor, her thoughtful words, her message-carrying T-shirts, and as an avid gardener who found joy in tending and nurturing living things. She could often be seen crocheting, finding joy in making handmade gifts for others as a quiet expression of her love and generosity.

A memorial service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church on January 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Friends who wish to honor Jean are welcome to send flowers or living plants in her memory.

Jean will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
