James Russell "Rusty" Doss
May 31, 1962 – January 22, 2025
James Russell (Rusty) Doss, a beloved husband, father, and resident troublemaker of Lilburn, GA, passed away at the age of 62 on January 22, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Rusty is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Tracie Doss; his children, Dalton Doss (Sarah) and Brittney Doss (William Crouch); his devoted mother, Ann Doss; and his sister, Jenny Fiscus. He is preceded in death by his father, Don Doss, who no doubt greeted him with a firm handshake and a warm smile at Heaven's gates.
Born on May 31, 1962, Rusty grew up in Tucker, GA, where he attended Tucker High School and built a reputation as a mischief-maker extraordinaire. He may have raised hell in his youth, but he made up for it by being a fiercely devoted husband, father, and friend. Rusty's idea of spoiling his family wasn't just about Disney World trips (though there were plenty of those); it was in every small act of love, care, and, most importantly, the perfectly grilled steak.
Rusty's passion for muscle cars was matched only by his love for bargaining with car salesmen. Few could hold their own against him on a dealership lot-though many likely tried. He maintained his lawn with military precision, earning both the admiration of his neighbors and probably some jealousy.
Rusty and Tracie's love story began at Shumate Mechanical, where their romance was so inspiring that it led to a change in the company's dating policy. (You're welcome, HR.) Rusty worked at Shumate for 37 years, starting as an HVAC tech before climbing the ranks into commercial sales, where he played a key role in growing the company's success. His entrepreneurial spirit also shone as the co-founder of Alliance Supply and Piping, where he was instrumental in building the business into what it is today.
Rusty's life was a testament to hard work, family values, and the occasional good-natured debate over horsepower. While cancer may have taken him too soon, it could never dull his sharp wit, kind heart, or love for those around him.
To honor Rusty's legacy, and in true Rusty fashion, we'd rather you spend your money on helping others. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Rest easy, Rusty-you've earned it. And don't worry, the lawn looks great.
A Celebration of Rusty's life will be held 5:00-7:00 Friday, February 7, 2025 at Bill Head Funeral Home Lilburn/Tucker Chapel 770-564-2726.
