Robert Schulz "Bob" Vathing, age 89, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026, in
Minnetonka, Minnesota.
Born on June 17, 1936, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Sigurd and Doris Vathing. He grew up with a strong foundation of faith and family, values that would guide him throughout his life. Raised in the Lutheran tradition, Bob later converted to Catholicism following his marriage.
Bob earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and went on to build a successful career as a Certified Public Accountant. His dedication and integrity led him to become a partner at LAWCO, where he was respected for his professionalism and work ethic.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Bob proudly served for 12 years in the Air National Guard. His service reflected his sense of duty and loyalty.
Bob shared a loving marriage with Darlene (Wagner), his devoted wife of 60 years. Together they built a life centered around family and enduring love. He was a proud father to Becky (Dan) Torborg and Steve (Chris) Vathing. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Christopher (Savannah), Robbie, Max, Luke, and Lily-and most recently through the joy of his great-grandson Teddy.
Bob is also remembered by his sister Judy Williams and brother Jim (Patty), along with many nieces, nephews, and friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity. He was preceded in death by his parents Sigurd and Doris Vathing and by his in-laws Grover and Adela Wagner.
Bob found joy in celebrating any occasion with great food and drink with family and friends, golf, fishing, walks on the beach, reading and debating any topic. These simple pleasures brought him peace and allowed him to connect with nature and those around him.
Those who knew Bob will remember him for his generous spirit, sharp sense of humor, unwavering loyalty to family, and tireless work ethic. Whether sharing a laugh, a tight hug or lending a helping hand, he left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
We would also like to send a heartfelt thank you for all the love and care provided by his wonderful and loving caregivers at The Glenn Minnetonka and Interim. They provided him with comfort, care, love and laughter throughout his last few months of life.
May Robert Schulz Vathing's memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him. Mass of Christian Burial: February 2, 2026, 11:00 am, Saint Therese, 18323 Minnetonka Blvd. Visitation prior to Mass at 10:00 am.
