Paul Mortimer Obituary

Paul William Mortimer, Sr., 83 years old of Warwick, departed this life on March 8, 2025, surrounded by his best friend, love of his life, and wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen. Born and raised in Providence, he also spent time at a family home on Warwick Pond. Paul's professional life consisted of prior service in the Army Reserves and over 40 years in the banking industry. Paul had many hobbies and interests over the years that include being an officer in the Rhode Island Tropical Fish Society, breeding African Cichlids from Lake Tanganyika, bird watching within his backyard, graphic design, packaging thousands of homemade chocolate chip cookies, and cooking his amazing Quahog Chowder. He also enjoyed outdoor/indoor organic gardening and had a lemon tree in his living room which yielded lemons regularly.
However, if you asked him, Paul would tell you his greatest achievement in life was his family. Paul was known for his quick wit, blunt honesty, attention to detail, and his ability to make friends with every customer service associate he called. He will be remembered for all the joy he brought to others through his handmade cards for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and other special moments. His sayings include: "I did my due diligence", "Safety First", "Teamwork" and "Give credit where credit is due!"
He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen (Boyd) Mortimer, three children: Debbie Faith (husband Lauren Commons), Pamela Schaal (husband Corey), and Paul William "Bill" Mortimer Jr. (wife Hilary); seven grandchildren: Michael McCarthy (wife Becca), Ryan Leffler (wife Krista), Charlotte Marquez (husband Orlando), Maxwell Gleadow, John Henry Mortimer, Elizabeth Mortimer, and Zachary Schaal and two great grandchildren: John McCarthy and Sarah McCarthy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Paul's Life on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 3:00PM at THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick. Visitation will be held prior from 1:00PM-3:00PM.
Interment will take place on Monday, March 24, 2025 at 11:00AM at the Chapel of Gates of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence. Guests are invited to gather at the Cemetery by 10:45AM.
The family, and especially Paul, would like to thank those that have provided love and support to him and his family during his recent illness – the medical staff at Kent County Hospital especially 3 North and 2 West, Scout Troops 7 and 77 Buttonwoods, Hope Hospice, Right at Home Care and numerous friends and family members who stopped by to spend time sharing their special memories with Paul and Mary Ellen.
