Paul James Brown, October 30, 1944 – February 18, 2025
Paul James Brown, 80, of Lathrop, Missouri, quietly passed away on the morning of February 18, 2025, after a brave battle with cancer. Born on October 30, 1944, in the farmhouse outside of Lathrop where he was raised, Paul spent most of his life there. He is predeceased by his parents, James William Brown (d. 1959) and Ida Virginia Crouch Brown Porter (d. 2015) of Lathrop.
Paul attended Lathrop High School and graduated in the class of 1962. He was a member of the FFA and achieved the status of Star Farmer. As a member of the Lathrop 4-H Club, he showed his black angus calves and sheep at county shows, and he took his prized calves to the American Royal in Kansas City several times as well as the Missouri State Fair.
Paul was deeply committed to his community. He was a member of the Lathrop Methodist Church and also the local Jaycees, where he participated enthusiastically in their many civic projects.
During his early years, Paul worked on the family farm growing crops and raising livestock. Known for his willingness to help neighbors, he was always ready to lend a hand.
Paul joined the Lathrop Antique Club early on and helped develop their show grounds into the well known venue it is today. He refurbished old tractors and farm equipment that were showcased at the yearly shows; and as a skilled sorghum master, he prepared the sorghum that was sold at club events.
After retiring from farming, Paul cared for his mother until her passing. He continued to be actively involved with the Antique Club and Show Grounds. Paul was an avid reader of Old West history and novels and enjoyed watching hunting shows, classic Western reruns and WWII movies.
Paul is survived by his sisters, Nancy Brown Bridge (Gary) of Statesville, North Carolina; Judy Kay Brown Hess (d. Fred) of Pembroke Pines, Florida; and Janet Brown Hubbard Ogden (Steve) of Kansas City, Missouri. He is also survived by his uncle, Richard C. Crouch of Kansas City, Missouri, and his aunt, Jane Crouch Shrewsbury of Lathrop, Missouri. Additionally, he leaves behind nephews and nieces Jason Hubbard (Carisa), Andrew Hubbard (Alicia), Rachel Hubbard Kline (Brad), and Emily Bridge (Nolan); great nephews and nieces Jace, Shae, and Hays Hubbard; A.J. and Evie Hubbard; and Alice and Eva Kline, as well as several cousins in the Lathrop area.
Paul's legacy is one of hard work, kindness, and dedication to his community. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A celebration of Paul's life will take place on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at the church located within the Lathrop Show Grounds. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, just before the service. Following the celebration, interment will be held at the Lathrop Cemetery, with lunch to follow immediately after.
In lieu of flowers, Paul requested that donations be made to the Lathrop Antique Club or the
Shriners Hospital for Children's Cancer Research.
