Myrtle Walker Obituary

Myrtle Laura Walker, 99, died Wednesday October 30, 2024, at her home in Gardner. She was born in Hubbardston on March 15, 1925, daughter of the late Charles E. and Agnes (O'Donnell) Mayo. Myrtle graduated from Athol High School and Heywood Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Burbank Hospital and the Fitchburg VNA. She was married to Sidney M. Walker for nearly 70 years, before his death December 4, 2016.

Myrtle is survived by her four children: James, Nancy and husband David Gundersen, Barbara, and Richard and wife Theresa; seven grandchildren: Amy Comeau and husband Joe, Mathew Beauregard and wife Michelle, Joel Skye Walker, Bruce Walker and wife Brittany, Jeremy Walker and wife Roxanne, Lynn Filice and husband Roberto, and Beth White; 17 great grandchildren; a brother Lawrence Mayo and wife Louise; and many nieces and nephews.

Myrtle was predeceased by her two brothers: Windsor O'Donnell and his wife Helen, Charles E. Mayo, Jr., and her sister Iris (Mayo) Thompson Jackson.

Myrtle loved traveling all over the world with Walking Adventures, Collette, and the Gardner Senior Center. For many years, she participated in the Finnish dance group Revontulet with Sid as her devoted dance partner. She also enjoyed numerous walks with the volksport group Walk n' Mass. Myrt loved being active and outdoors - swimming, skiing, snowshoeing, bike riding, and hiking. She was an avid quilter and crafter, gifting many a quilt to family and friends. She was an active member of the Westminster and Gardner Senior Centers and a lifetime member of the Westminster Congregational Church.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at 11AM in the First Congregational Church of Westminster, 138 Main Street, Westminster, MA 01473.

Calling hours will be held in the church from 9:30 to 11AM. Her burial will follow at Woodside Cemetery, 9 Narrows Rd, Westminster.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church for the Women's Fellowship.
