Obituary published on Legacy.com by Shafer Funeral Home on Jan. 31, 2025.
Funeral services for Reverend Monica DeNell Massey, 40, of Apple Springs, will be held Sunday, February 2, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at Timber Creek Church in Lufkin with Pastor Phil Corbett, Pastor Dennis Land, and Pastor Jeremy Yancey officiating. Private Interment will be at Bennett Cemetery in Apple Springs.
Monica was born on January 29, 1984, in
Lufkin, Texas, to Michael J. Massey and Felicia Jernigan, and Graduated to Heaven Tuesday, January 28, 2025, in Apple Springs.
Monica graduated as Valedictorian, class of 2002 from Apple Springs High School. Due to her profound faith at an early age and obeying her calling, she became an ordained minister through her studies at North Texas District School of Ministry. In October of 2016 Monica graduated Magna Cum Laude from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Human Services.
She was the Associate Pastor at Corrigan First Assembly of God and the Director of case management for team west of Texas Family Care Network.
Monica was a travel enthusiast with a passion to explore with the people she loved. Along with a fun adventure, she never turned down a beautiful vintage item at just the right price, or a "nice, lighthearted, friendly" board game or round of spoons.
Out of all her accomplishments and titles, the one she was most proud of was Aunt Mon Mon. There are few people who take this role as seriously as she did. She was there as their cheerleader and supporter in all things Wade and Oaklynn related.
Most recently Monica received the title of fiancé to her husband-to-be, Greg Moon. And by accepting his proposal she gained an additional level of joy that was obvious to any and everyone in her life. May the legacy you left behind be never ending.
She is survived by her father and mother, Al and Felicia Jernigan; brother and sister-in-law, Trevor and Kayla Jernigan; nephew and niece, Wade Forrest and Oaklynn all of Apple Springs; husband-to-be Greg Moon, and his children of Winston Salem, NC; aunt, Hazel Molandes and niece, Hannah Molandes of Jefferson; aunt, Jacqueline Hodge of Onalaska; aunt, Sheila Arledge of Zavalla; uncle and aunt, Darrell and Jayne Forrest of Apple Springs; aunt, Cindy Forrest of Apple Springs; uncle and aunt, Travis and Jennifer Forrest of Apple Springs; uncle and aunt, Don and Lorretta Andrews of Trinity; uncle and aunt, Gary and Frances Rowe of Sebastopol; aunt, Helen Smith of TN; Pastors, Phil and Rachel Corbett and Pastoral Family of Corrigan First Assembly of God; and a multitude of close cousins, friends, and Co-workers.
She was preceded in death by her biological father, Michael J. Massey; grandparents, Arthur D. and Nellev Forrest, J.B., and Emma Massey; Uncles, Sherwood and Kirk Forrest; and special aunt, Joy White.
Pallbearers are Trevor Jernigan, Gary Forrest, James Herring, Russell Tullos, Weston Forrest, Justin Forrest, and Greg Moon.
