Remembering, Monica "Moni" Raye (Brownsword) Massey, a shining light in our lives. Monica, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend passed away at the age of 66, from a brief illness on May 5th, 2024 surrounded by her family in
Canton, Ohio at Aultman Hospital. Monica was born on September 22, 1957 in
Canton, Ohio to Julia Brownsword King and the late Glen Brownsword.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, John (Mona) Egan; paternal grandparents, Thomas and Virginia Brownsword; son-in-law, Freddie "Buck" Mcmeans; and mother and father in-law, Daniel and Eloise Massey.
Survived by her loving husband, Bernard Massey Sr. of whom she shared 49 years of marriage; three sons, James (Christine) Massey, Bernard (Angelina) Massey II, and Clayton (Tanya) Massey; one daughter, Ricca (Massey) Mcmeans; her loving mother, Julia King; two sisters, Marcia (Milton) Young, and, Glendora Brownsword; one brother, John King; eight grandchildren, Desiree, Thomas "TJ", Tamia, Lexi, Bernard "Lil B", Skye, Lyric, and Chase; two great grandchildren, Daisy, and Karson, all of
Canton, Ohio. Also survived by her, are her close sisters-in-law, Shirley Henderson Kennard, Paulette (Larry) McElroy, Sara Fite, Gloria Massey; brothers-in-law, Randy (Pam) Massey, Pete (Pat) Massey, and Donald Reith, all of
Canton, Ohio; special nieces, Erica "Shahada", and Nikki; special nephew, Brian; close family friends, Tom Wilcoxon, Keisha Peterson, Becki Carpenter; and a host of nieces, and nephews.
Monica's radiant smile could light up a room and warm the hearts of all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and joy, inspiring countless lives with her infectious positivity and warmth. Her beautiful smile, which could disarm even the grumpiest of souls, will be deeply missed, but its memory will continue to inspire us to spread love and kindness in her honor. As we say goodbye to this precious soul, we take comfort in the memories of her fun filled family get-togethers, peacemaking ways, and her unwavering optimism. May her legacy continue to inspire us to live with joy, love, and a heart full of warmth. As we imagine, seeing her laughing in the Purple Rain, she will be missed, yet never forgotten.
