It is with heavy hearts yet joyful spirits that we announce the passing of Mattie Belle Johnson, age 83, of Rockport, Texas, who departed this life on February 24, 2026. Born in Silverton, Texas, on May 28, 1942, Mattie spent her childhood in Amarillo, where she graduated from Amarillo High School in 1960.
In 2003, she married Lawrence T. Johnson, and together they created a warm and loving home filled with laughter and joy. Mattie enjoyed a successful career in management at Walmart, from which she retired in 2005. Her vibrant personality and generous heart touched the lives of many. Mattie was deeply involved in her community and was a cherished member of the Fulton Community Church. A true lover of life, she found happiness in playing dominos, cards, and puzzles, as well as spending time fishing and enjoying family gatherings. Mattie had a zest for adventure, often hitting the open road with her husband on their fully dressed out top of the line, Harley Davidson motorcycle, and she also found peace in watching hummingbirds flit by.
Mattie will be dearly missed by her devoted husband, Lawrence, and her beloved children: Tom (Stacy) Sain, Taylor (Norena) Sain, Starla (Kevin) Ponick, Chad (Dany) Johnson, Shannon (Ann) Johnson. She was the proud grandmother to 12 grandchildren, a great-grandmother to 12 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandmother to one little one. She leaves behind her sister, Joni Y. Langham, and two brothers, Deryal G. Neese and Danny M. Neese. Mattie was preceded in death by her cherished family members, including her parents, Mary K. Neese and Thomas M. Neese, as well as her sisters, Peggy J. Blackwell and Regina A. McPhail. Rest in peace, dear Mattie. Your love will remain in our hearts forever.
