Obituary published on Legacy.com by Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Inc. - Morehead on Feb. 7, 2026.
Luther "Poss" Adams, 92, departed UK-St Claire Hospital in order to attend the largest, grandest birthday party he has ever had on February 6, 2026. Attending and waiting for him at this Heavenly party was his wife of 67 years, Betty Jo Asher; his parents, George M "Pottan" and Sally Banks Adams; his five brothers: George "Hawgeye" Adams, William "Goose" Adams, Gurnie Adams, Douglas Adams, and James Adams; his four sisters: Opal Banks, Martha Howard, Susie Raglin, and Hazel Adams. Along with many family and friends. Luther could always light up a room with his quick wit and playful attitude. I'm sure he had everyone laughing and smiling at his birthday homecoming.
Luther was born February 6, 1934, in Carbon Glow in Letcher County, Kentucky. He attended Stuart Robinson High School, where it is rumored he had the basketball moves of Pete Maravich. He was a dribbling and passing fool!
He joined the United States Air Force in September of 1953, where he took a bus first to Ashland, Kentucky, and then on to Utica, New York. He departed New York enroute to Tokyo, Japan via San Francisco spending eleven hours aboard the USS Patrick. He was stationed at Haneda Airport in Tokyo where he was a flight line mechanic on the B36 bomber. He served until 1957.
After his years in the service, his dad, Pottan, helped him buy a 1951 Chevy so he could attend Mayo Vocational School in Paintsville, Kentucky. From there Luther went to Detroit, Michigan, to work a short stint at Briggs Manufacturing installing seat covers. Luther and Betty got married and moved to Farmersville, Ohio, where he went to work for McCall's Printing Press, later known as Dayton Press, as the Rail Clerk Supervisor and later becoming Assistant Traffic Manager for Truck and Railway Nationwide.
Luther had a life-long love for old cars, collecting many of his own. He was super proud of his 1955 Chevy and loved to be in parades hauling many dignitaries, beautiful princesses and homecoming queens. He was a collector of ballcaps and had been known to talk many people out of the hat on their head. Oil cans were another passion for him. He would often receive them as birthday, Christmas and Father's Day gifts, proudly displaying them all around the garage and barn.
Luther was a member of the American Legion Post and Honor Guard for fifteen years, participating in over 400 funerals. He was a Master Mason and Shriner. He was an integral part of the early stages of the Morehead Veterans Park, Wall and Veterans Museum volunteering on many occasions.
Luther loved a good parade. This is why he made sure Morehead's parades were the best around. He took pride in planning and implementing MSU Homecoming Parades, Memorial Day Parades and July 4th Parades for over 25 years.
He is survived by one son, Michael Luther Adams and his "favorite daughter-in-law", Patsy of
Morehead, Kentucky. A grandson, whom he was so proud of, Zachary Michael Adams and wife Brittany. A granddaughter, whom we all know was Luther's favorite, Shelby Leigh Richmond and her husband Gabe all of Morehead. Four great-grandchildren, Elliana Grace and Weston Michael Adams and Elijah Gabriel and Isaiah Daniel Richmond. He is also survived by one sister, DaNola Bell of Farmersville, Ohio.
