Loyd William Meeks, 94, of Shelbyville, Kentucky, passed away on November 15, 2024, at Maple Grove Senior Living, LLC in Shelbyville, Kentucky. He was born on October 23, 1930, in Oakland, Kentucky to Chester Meeks and Lucille (Scruggs) Meeks. On December 31, 1953, he married the love of his life, Christine Turner, she preceded him in death on June 8, 1993. He retired from Crown Cork and Seal after forty years of employment. Loyd was a former member of the Methodist Church in Morrow, Ohio. As a young man, Loyd was a horse groomer and worked his way up to being an assistant trainer for racehorses. He was a Mason for over sixty years in the Ohio lodge #265. Loyd was also a member of the VFW in Scott County, Indiana and Warren County, Ohio, Scottsburg Moose Lodge, was a part of the Scott County Shrine Club, a member of the Shrine in Cincinnati, Ohio, and a member of the AMICK-BAKER-KELLUM FOP Lodge #156 and was given the Ploceman Friend Award. He was a member of Morrow Volunteer Fire Department for over 25 years also serving as an EMTA on the rescue squad and was a part of their dive team. Loyd also served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Between Loyd and his six brothers there are over one hundred years of service. In addition to his parents and wife, Christine, Loyd is preceded in death by five brothers, Joseph "Joe" Meeks, Elvis Ray Meeks, Chester Meeks, Jr., Virgil Roman Meeks, and Thomas Meeks, one sister, Mary Mann; one granddaughter, Rachel Erin Poe. Loyd is survived by one daughter, Elaine Hill; one brother, Delbert (Ann Richey) Meeks of Lexington, Indiana; three sisters, Velma (Delmar) Coomer of Scottsburg, Indiana, Wanda Stidham of Scottsville, Kentucky, and Barbara (Howard) Malcomb of North Vernon, Indiana; one grandchild, Heather Kathleen (Gary) Gilliam; six great grandchildren, Cecelia Elaine (Geoffrey) Taylor; Hannah Elizabeth Howard; Seth Howard; Johanna Rachel Gillam, Adam (Cayce) Gillam and Ian Gillam. He has 27 nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews and many cousins. Funeral services for Loyd Meeks will be 12:00pm Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana. Visitation will be prior to services on Thursday for his close and extended family at 9:00am and then for the public from 10:00am until 12:00pm. Burial will follow with Military Honors at Scaffold Lick Cemetery in Blocher, Indiana. Memorial donations can be made in Loyd's name to Shriners Hospitals for Children in c/o Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana.
