Dr. Skya (Linda) Abbate,73, formally of Rhode Island, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, after a two-year struggle with a terminal illness. She is survived by her beloved husband Dr. Anthony Abbate of 39 years. He is a Vietnam Veteran and former CEO of Southwest Acupuncture College where Skya also worked for forty-three years as Executive Director and full professor as a doctor of oriental medicine.
Born in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Dorothy (Fox) Brown. Skya is sister to Dianne DeMolles and husband Dr. Alex DeMolles, sister Liz Joseph and husband Anthony Joseph, brothers David Brown, Steven Brown and the late Walter Brown and brothers-in-law the honorable Joseph Abbate and William Abbate. She adored her fourteen nephews and nieces and her four great nephews and nieces.
Formed by her Catholic education from grammar school through the doctoral level she loved writing theological pieces for professional journals and expanding her cosmological world view of the mystery of the Incarnation to find God in all things, particularly nature. She served in multiple ministries for over twenty years at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe her favorite being an altar server.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 9:30am, in St. Francis De Sales Parish, 381 School Street, North Kingston, RI, followed by a burial in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, RI. A viewing will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 4-6pm, in the Thomas and Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave, Warwick, RI, 02889.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nature Conservancy, the National Wildlife Federation or the ASPCA would be appreciated to protect our fragile planet and the care of vulnerable creatures.
