Leslie DeWitt, also known as Wakimah, age 63, of East Orange, New Jersey passed away on Tuesday, March 18th, 2025 at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey.
Leslie was born February 18th, 1962 to Isaac and Eula Mae DeWitt. She was the youngest of nine children and as a child attended New Dawn Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey.
Leslie attended South Side High School, now known as Malcom X Shabazz. After high school, she pursued a nursing career at Essex County Vocational Technical School; but eventually became the favorite bar tender at Grahams where everyone requested "Wakimah."
Leslie's favorite pastimes included playing cards and bingo with family and friends. A good scratch-off would always make her smile! She spent her spare time routinely calling family and friends to check in and when the call ended she never allowed you to say "Good bye" but she would simply say "Later."
Leslie was preceded by her parents, Isaac and Eula Mae DeWitt; three brothers: Bobby Wilson, Benjamin McCray and Covesant (Gene) DeWitt; and three sisters: Carolyn Bellamy, Geraldine (Jackie) DeWitt and Carole DeWitt.
Leslie leaves to cherish in memories two daughters, Wanda Monique DeWitt of Little River, SC and Shawanda Denise DeWitt of Newark, NJ; family friend (like her son), Tyquan Miller of East Orange, NJ; seven sisters, Jennie DeWitt of Loris, SC, Angelaine D. Mason of Houston, TX, Hazel E. Jones of Irvington, NJ, Catherine DeWitt of Newark, NJ, Marilyn (Ronald) Bailey of Newport News, VA, Essie (Clyde) Manley of Houston, TX and Sharon (Doral) Dozier of Townsend, GA; one sister-in-law, Bertha McCray of Longs, SC; one brother-in law, Randy Richardson of Loris, SC; two aunts: Gladys Baldwin of Loris, SC and Mary Hubbard of Wildwood, NJ; one uncle, Jason (Linda) Wolfe of Florence, SC; a special cousin, Michael Hubbard of Wildwood, NJ; and a host of other cousins, nieces and nephews whom she cared about deeply.
In this time, we gather to say we love her but it's not goodbye, its "See Ya Later!"
