Julie Joy Whittenberg Humphreys, 78, of New Carlisle, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Julie was born to Johnetta and Donald E. Whittenberg on June 27, 1946, in Houston, Texas. Growing up in Texas, she fell in love with flowers, particularly bluebonnets and yellow roses as she worked alongside her Daddy in his beautiful rose garden.
After graduating high school, Julie attended William Woods Girls College in Fulton, MO, to pursue a degree in architecture, later transferring to the University of Missouri in Columbia, where she studied interior design. It was there that she joined the sisterhood of Delta Gamma, and truly flourished. She then met Robert; they fell in love and married after graduating in 1968. Their Greek lives at Mizzou afforded them many special friendships and memories. Later in life, one of those dear friends was in need and Julie was able to give the selfless gift of a kidney donation.
After graduation and starting a family, Julie and Robert lived briefly in both Kansas City and Houston before settling in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where they chose to raise their children. Julie became involved in the community, often volunteering in the schools as a room mom and actively participating in the Infant Welfare Society of Glen Ellyn and the Glen Ellyn Historical Society. She spent years designing, planning, and then refurbishing a beautiful 100-year-old Victorian home on Main Street, which was later featured in several books, magazines, and newspapers. That home brought so much joy to her and her family through the years.
Julie spent time working for Patricia Lacock Antiques before realizing her dream of opening her own flower shop, Mantels & More. More than just a flower shop filled with beautiful blooms, it became a gathering place where friends stopped by, kids visited after school, and everyone was greeted with her signature "Hi y'all!"
The only thing she loved more than flowers was being "Shoogie" to her three precious grandchildren. She was deeply proud of them, loved them endlessly, and built an incredibly special bond with them after moving to Indiana. She cherished every minute they spent together and was fortunate to be part of so many of their memories throughout the years.
Julie remained active in her Delta Gamma Alumni Association, where she formed cherished bonds of friendship that lasted throughout her life and was overjoyed when her only granddaughter recently pledged Delta Gamma at Ole Miss, allowing them to share in this special sisterhood.
Julie is survived by her two children, Robert Alan Humphreys, Jr. (Bozeman, Montana) and Amanda (Bryan) Jones (Granger, Indiana) as well as her beautiful grandchildren: Campbell, Charlotte, and Christian Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnetta and Donald E. Whittenberg Sr.; her brother, Donald E. Whittenberg Jr.; her husband of 52 years, Robert; as well as their sweet Black Lab named Beau.
A celebration of Julie's beautiful life will be held later this summer. Memorial contributions may be made to:
• Alzheimer's & Dementia Services of Northern Indiana (alzni.org/get-involved/donate/)
• The Hamilton Grove Foundation (greencroft.org/hamiltongrove/foundation/)
