Judy Prater Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Snyder Funeral Homes, Denzer Chapel on Feb. 7, 2026.
Judy Ann Prater, age 73, of Marion, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by the love of her family, on Thursday, February 5, 2026.

Judy was born on July 24, 1952, in Marion, to Alvin H. and Ethel "Betty" (McConnell) Merritt. She was a 1970 graduate of Ridgedale High School. On June 9, 1973, she married Gary Reid Prater, and together they shared 52 wonderful years of marriage, building a home filled with love, faith, and family.

Throughout her life, Judy worked in various secretarial roles for several local businesses, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic. She was also the proud founder and owner of Garden Beginnings, a business she operated for 17 years. Judy found great joy in working with her hands, whether tending to her beautiful flower gardens or nurturing a bountiful vegetable garden. Her gardens were a true reflection of her care, patience, and creativity.

Above all else, Judy was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a proud grandmother. Her family was the center of her world. She was a gifted baker who delighted in sharing her homemade treats, and she enjoyed scrapbooking and creating thoughtful, handmade cards to celebrate special moments in the lives of those she loved. Judy was also a faithful and active member of Grand Prairie Baptist Church, where her faith guided her life and relationships.

Judy is survived by her loving husband, Gary Reid Prater; her daughters, Julie (Josh) Alexander and Jill (Ryan) Brammer; her cherished grandchildren, Chesney Alexander, Bronson Alexander, Reid Brammer, and Anna Brammer; and her siblings, Allen (Jean) Merritt and Randy (Vicki) Merritt.

Her kindness, creativity, and devotion to her family will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Snyder Funeral Homes, Denzer Chapel, 360 East Center St. Marion from 4PM to 7PM; funeral service will be Friday at Grand Prairie Baptist Church, 4893 Marion-Upper Sandusky Rd, Marion at 11AM; burial will follow at Grand Prairie Cemetery.

If desired, donations may be made to the Grand Prairie Baptist Church.

Gary, Julie and Jill,
My heart aches for you. What a wonderful, fun and strong woman Judy was. We would play racketball together and she was so competitive. We had a blast. She also had such a fun side to her too even while being competitive.
Also, I was blessed because having 13 years working with her. She kept us together as a team and she was so dedicated to her friends and her work ethic was out of this world.
She will be missed on this earth but God and heaven knows how fortunate they are to her.
