Josephine Hofer, age 95, of Huron, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2025, at Avantara – Huron.
Her memorial service will be held in the Summer of 2025.
The family requests that Memorials may be made in Josephine's name to Byron Bible Camp or the Child Evangelism Fellowship.
Josephine Gross Hofer was born August 5, 1929, to Paul W. and Anna (Tschetter) Gross at Highmore, South Dakota. Her family moved to Beadle County in 1939. She attended Mortimer County School at Hitchcock, South Dakota.
On April 9, 1952, Josephine married John J. Hofer at Ivanhoe, Minnesota. John left for the United States Army 5 days later on April 14, 1952. They were stationed in San Antonio, Texas and Albuquerque, New Mexico until he was honorably discharged in April 1954.
Josephine was a stay-at-home mom, raising her eight children. Because of her large family, Josephine spent a lot of time cooking and baking for her family.
Josephine worked at the Council Oak Store, Pamida, the South Dakota State Fair, and the Huron School District Lunch Program while her health permitted.
Josephine was a member of the Hutterthal Mennonite Church (now Prairie Bible Church) in rural Carpenter, and was baptized in that church in 1946. Josephine also attended Bethesda Mennonite Church in Huron. She was a willing worker and served on the food committee at both churches.
Josephine enjoyed putting puzzles together and visiting with family and friends. She also enjoyed spending time with and attending the many different events and sporting activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Josephine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her beloved daughter, Janine; son, Darrell; great-grandson, Dante Mercado; her brother, LeRoy Gross; and her sister, Ruby Walter.
Grateful for having been part of Josephine's life are her children: Darwin (Becky) Hofer (Elko New Market, MN), Brenda (Doug) Smith (Sioux Falls,SD), Loren (Paula) Hofer (Hitchcock, SD), Joletta (Craig) Heller (Wolsey, SD), Carey Hofer (Rapid City, SD), and Gena (Dr. Gary) Timmerman (Sioux Falls, SD); daughter-in-law, Kathy Hofer (
Huron, SD); fourteen grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
