Harley Thomas Henderson of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away Monday, February 10th 2025, peacefully in his sleep.
Harley was born at home on April 23, 1935 in Franklin, North Carolina to Tillery Thomas Henderson and Marguerite Fulton Henderson. Harley spent his early years on the family farm and later enlisted in the US Navy. While stationed overseas, he met and married his loving wife, Inge van de Wall Henderson. They were married in Bremerhaven, Germany and honeymooned in Spain. Shortly after, Harley was stationed in Edzell, Scotland where they adopted their only child, Thomas. They settled in Summerville, SC where Harley retired as a Master Chief. After retiring from the Navy, Harley returned to school and earned an accounting degree from Charleston Southern University, as well as a masters degree from the Citadel. He then became the Finance Director for the city of North Charleston, before retiring completely. Harley spent his retirement years with Inge traveling the world and enjoying his hobbies, which included running, reading, gardening, volunteering at the ARK, and cooking his mother's favorite recipes.
Harley was a beloved husband, father, and grandad who will be greatly missed, not only by his family, but by those who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 60 years; son Thomas Henderson (Courtney); and grandson Cullen Henderson. He was preceded in death by his parents and only brother John.
A funeral with military honors will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church on Thursday, February 20th at 1:00pm, with reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church or the ARK of Summerville.
