CPO George William "Chief" Moose, U.S. Coast Guard (Retired), age 82, of Trufant,Michigan, formerly of Fennville, Michigan, passed away early Saturday morning, February 22, 2025 at The Comfort Home in Reed City, Michigan, under the care of Corewell Health Hospice.
The son of Howard & Juanita (Tucker) Moose, he was born on April 7, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois. The family then moved to Allegan, Michigan, where he attended school along with his brothers, James Moose and John Moose.
After graduation, George attended and graduated from Hope College in 1971 with a degree in Education. He then went on to teach 5th grade at Pine Creek Elementary School in the West Ottawa Public School district, retiring after 30 years as an educator.
While attending college and teaching, George also served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve, retiring after 30 years of service to our Nation at the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
George was a animal and nature lover from a very early age. Growing up, he spent many hours camping, hiking and canoeing the Allegan Forest. He continued that passion by teaching his students to respect nature and the wildlife living there.
Surviving are his son, Ernest Howard Moose of Trufant; and his former wife, Ceresta Collins-Moose of Fennville.
Committal services, with military honors rendered jointly by the U.S Coast Guard and the all-volunteer Fort Custer Honor Guard, are at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 28, 2025 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Road, Augusta, Michigan. Committal prayers will be offered by U.S. Coast Guard Chaplain David Hansen.
Instead of flowers, George would have appreciated contributions in his memory to the Gillette Nature Association at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park ( https://gillettenatureassociation.org/support-education-conservation-and-recreation/ ).
