Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kaatz Funeral Directors – Hamilton-Groesbeck Chapel - Mt. Clemens on Feb. 6, 2025.
George V. DeVos, Jr., 85, died peacefully in Sarasota, FL on February 1, 2025, after a battle with dementia. George was a family man and faithful provider. He loved his family and friends. George's hobbies were hunting, fishing, boating, camping, canoeing, gardening, and in retirement years: traveling. In addition to being a family man, George faithfully served the community for 31 years as a Volunteer Fireman for the Chesterfield Township Fire Department in Michigan from the 1960's-1990's. He was frugal and resourceful. He would always say: "A penny saved is a penny earned". He was a hardworking man who personally hand-built his family's home with the help of his family and friends.
In addition to being a wonderful son, brother, uncle, father, grandfather and great grandfather he was a dedicated, loving, sacrificial husband who adored his late wife, Judith "Judy" Ann DeVos (deceased November 27, 2017). George was committed to his wife, Judy, and was her constant companion. When she resided in an assisted living facility in her later years, George never missed a day with his beloved wife. He was with her from sun-up to sun-down 365 days a year. George was sacrificial and others-centered; he always provided for his family even from a very early age. In his early years his mother, a single parent, struggled financially. Admirably, George quit Mt. Clemens High School to work full-time at Rickard's Heating and Cooling to support his mother and his siblings. Those who knew him knew how dedicated he was to provide for his loved ones.
He was born on November 19, 1939 in
Mt. Clemens, Michigan, son of George V. DeVos, Sr. and Anna Methner. He was married to Sharon R. (Clayssens) DeVos from 1960-1978. They had two children: Lynnette Marie (DeVos) Haskins and Anthony (Tony) Patrick DeVos.
On July 11, 1979, George married the love of his life, Judy. Together, they had a blended family - adding daughter and son: Janice (Beger) Moulton and John H. Beger.
One of his heating and cooling customers said he would be a good fit at GM because of his work ethic. So, in 1964 he earned his GED and began a 29-year long career at the General Motors/Fisher Body Tech Center and retired in 1993 as a plant security guard.
Like most Northerners, George and Judy became snowbirds, sharing their time between Michigan and Florida. In 2000 they made Leesburg, FL their year-round home until 2014 when Judy's health began to fail. They returned to Michigan to be near and to receive care from their son, Tony. After his wife's passing, George was lost and needed friendship and companionship. God blessed him with a wonderful lady friend, Linda Pallisco. Not only was she a blessing to him, but a blessing to his family because of her love and care for him. In July of 2022, George moved to Sarasota, FL to be near and receive care from daughter, Lynnette.
George was a man of few words but had he many "Georgisms" and he was a real jokester, having a sense of humor that was appreciated by his family and friends.
George is preceded in death by his parents: George Sr. and Anna, and by is beloved late wife: Judy.
Surviving siblings: brother, Frank DeVos, sisters: Mary Patrick, Celeste Stickler, Elaine Gokey, and Darlene Powers. Surviving children: Lynnette (Don) Haskins, Tony (Michele) DeVos, Janice (late husband Rich) Moulton, and John (Marion) Beger.
Also, survived by his grandchildren; Anthony P. DeVos, Jr., Joshua (Sydne) DeVos, Nathan Haskins, Kyle (Sara) Beger, Colin (Maia) Beger, Richard (Ashley) Moulton, Steven Moulton, Danielle (Jake) Landon and great-grandchildren; Millie, Zoey, Maddox DeVos, Brody, Knox, Wells, Quinn and Colbie Beger, Claire Moulton, Alina Herrera, Delaney, Grayson, Emma Moulton, Aubree and Conner Johnson, Dakota Landon and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
To sum up George's life, he had a HUGE heart for his family, he was a dedicated and faithful provider who lived life to please and provide for his family. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
