Edna May Smith Ohlin passed away peacefully in her own home and on her own terms on January 19, 2025. Mom was born in Spanish Fork, Utah on May 9, 1930, the 4th daughter and 12th child of Clarence and Edna Johnson Smith.
Mom grew up in Spanish Fork, Logan and Riverdale, graduating from Weber High in 1949. According to many messages in her year books, she was a "swell gal," "lots of fun" and "had a great sense of humor." Mom loved being involved and participated in drama, music, speech and journalism. Spending years with her dad on the farm gave a her a great love of the outdoors and surrounded her with examples of hard-work. Mom was always a hard-worker, right up to the very end. Just days before her passing she was cleaning out drawers and doing laundry. She never let anyone do anything for her that she could do herself. She was thrilled to learn new skills and was proud of what she had accomplished and found joy in others achievements. Everything about her exuded joy, no matter her circumstances. She was everyone's cheerleader, always with a huge smile on her face.
The Bamberger Railroad played an important role in mom's life – it's where she met Wayne, the love of her life, our dad. Wayne and May were married on November 24, 1949. On August 25, 1962, Mom and Dad and their three children were sealed in the Manti Temple. Mom and Dad enjoyed baseball games, fishing, traveling, weekly pinochle games with friends – they just enjoyed life and enjoyed being together.
Mom worked at the Cinedome 70 Theater for many years including time as the manager. She loved her job and the people she worked with, making life-long friendships. Her grandchildren have great memories of going to work with Grandma, enjoying movies and treats.
She studied her scriptures for hours each day. She loved the temple and worked at the Ogden Temple for many years. Mom was Christlike in her service to others, whether it be time or substance, she never counted the cost. Whenever there was a need, she was always the first person to respond. She lived a life of service and love.
May is survived by her three children Kristy (Nolan) Leishman, Mark (Lori) Ohlin and Betsy (Dave) Ray. Her 10 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Mom was proceeded in death by our Dad, Wayne Arthur Ohlin, who passed away on May 17, 1980 after 31 years of marriage. Her parents, and also all 12 of her siblings and their spouses have passed on. The reunion in heaven was glorious, with quite the welcoming committee.
We would like to give a special thanks to the IH hospice nurses Maggie and Kathleen for easing Mom's passing and helping us to care for Mom and keeping her in her home.
