Charlotte Wells Brackeen, 94, of Union, Mississippi, passed away peacefully at home on January 28, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on the family farm in Union—where she lived her entire life—she was the daughter of Charlie Clarence Wells and Ethel Morgan Wells. A proud Union girl, she graduated from Union High School and East Central Junior College.
At East Central, she met Charlie Denver Brackeen, whom she married in 1951 and remained with throughout his life. During the Korean War, she followed him while he served, then they moved to the University of Mississippi, where she worked for the Alumni Association while he was an All-American basketball player.
After his graduation at Ole Miss, there was a brief stint in New York City as Denver was drafted by the New York Knicks, but they soon returned to Decatur. He coached at East Central, and she worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service until her retirement.
She was a lifelong and devoted member of the Decatur United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling with her husband in retirement. She was a devoted reader, masterful cross-stitcher, and crossword virtuoso—particularly with the New York Times daily puzzle—she brought creativity and intellect to her quiet pursuits. Her home and yard remained in pristine condition, a reflection of her thoughtful care and unwavering attention to detail.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Denver Brackeen; her son, Charlie Wells Brackeen; her parents, Charlie Clarence Wells and Ethel Morgan Wells; and her uncle, Robert Marshall Wells, who was a constant figure in her life.
Survivors include her son, Morgan Denver Brackeen of Union, Mississippi; and four grandchildren: Jonathan Denver Brackeen, Sable O'Hara Ellingburg, Ashlee Rebekah Brackeen, and Dillon Wells Brackeen; she also had numerous great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will include Mike Mangum, Mike Brackeen, Robert Blount, Arin Brackeen, Bobby Blount, and Eric Ellingburg.
