Candace Anne Steadman, 75, passed away peacefully at her home in Exeter on March 15, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Westerly on January 11, 1950, to the late Kenneth Gardner and Grace Hunt. She will be forever remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.
A graduate of Chariho High School, Candace was a hardworking and passionate woman who embraced entrepreneurship before working for the U.S. Postal Service and later running the Old Niantic Pub in Bradford. She also worked at Foxwoods, Burlingame State Park and the Westerly-Pawcatuck YMCA before retiring from Turco Animal Hospital, reflecting her lifelong love of animals. She found joy in nature, whether camping, fishing, farming, or gardening.
Candace leaves her beloved husband of 48 years, James Steadman; her son, Matthew Remsen and his wife Michaela of North Kingstown; her daughters, Kristin Blanchette and her husband Joseph of Glenmoore, PA, and Courtney Steadman of Exeter; her brother, Mark Gardner; her sisters, Roann Sulak, Danielle Cyr, and Susan Gaccione; her grandchildren, Cassandra, Victoria, Olivia, Logan and Natalee; her great granddaughter, Leighton; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings Rhonda Cunningham, Paula House, Rochelle Hargrave, and Robin Cyr.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Candace's many dear friends who stood by her side. She was blessed to know so many wonderful people, and while it is impossible to name everyone, please know that each of you was loved and appreciated. A special thank you to Donna and Ray Capalbo and their family, as well as Bruce and Christa Gardner and their family, for their enduring friendship and support.
Candace's Funeral Home Service will be held on Saturday March 22, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the Carpenter Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. Her Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to a local animal shelter or a
charity of choice. Candace, your love and light will continue to guide us. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
