Beverly Sawyer Obituary

Beverly Grinder Sawyer Batten of Chesapeake was born June 23, 1949, to the late Tom and Hattie Grinder in Columbia, NC and passed into the presence of our Lord on March 8, 2025.
She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Jim Sawyer, in 2013.
Left to cherish her memory are her faithful and loving partner of seven years, Eugene Batten; her son, Jimmy Sawyer, Jr. and wife, Donna; grandchildren, Zachary and Miranda Sawyer; Donna's children, Emily and Teddy, all of Cleveland, TN. She also leaves behind her sister, Barbara Eby (Rev. Amos Eby) of Chesapeake; brother-in-law, Joe (Jean)Sawyer of Rocky Mt. NC; and sister-in-law, Wilma (David Burns) of Michigan.
Beverly graduated from Norfolk Christian Schools in 1967. She served as secretary to the Pentecostal Ambassadors of the International Pentecostal Church of Christ on the district and national levels for 20 years. She owned and managed a home repair business and two rental corporations. She was a member of Azalea Garden Church of God and its Young at Heart senior ministries. Beverly and her late husband taught the Marriage Enrichment Class at AGC for 14 years. She was a loving caregiver for her late husband through various cancers which began early in their marriage. She also cared for her parents in her home during their latter years of declining health. Beverly used her God-given gift of teaching and counseling young married couples and frequently hosted large gatherings at her home.
Her last few years were spent with her beloved Gene Batten, who tried to teach her about football. She was a member of the Chesapeake Sports Club and the Chesapeake General Hospital Auxiliary. Gene's son, Terry (Karen), and daughter, Rhonda, as well as the whole Batten clan became her family
. The family invites you to join them for a time of visiting on Friday, March 14, 2025 from 3-5pm at Azalea Garden Church in Virginia Beach, with a service to follow starting promptly at 5pm. Memorial Contributions can be made to Azalea Garden Church Young at Heart Senior Ministries.
