She was a shy little girl who enjoyed her country life in Sanco and in Robert Lee. She met her kindred spirit friend in Dora Richardson Springer on the school bus in first grade, and they remained friends for life. Her other best friend, Yvonne McCutchen Devoll was also on that bus a couple of years later. They will have each other's love forever.
When she began dating Elmer Adkins at the age of 14, she knew he was her mate for life, as he knew she was his. They married on October 25, 1947, after WWII. Except for a brief sojourn in Big Spring, Eldorado, and Uvalde following work in the oilfield, they lived in Sanco and later settled in Robert Lee in 1954.
Barbara Jo Ross Adkins passed from the worldly plane to be with her Maker and "her boys" on Friday, January 17, 2025, at the age of 96, peacefully, and at her home of 71 years.
She was an excellent cook and housekeeper and was always up before Elmer to fix him a hot breakfast and a lunch to take to work. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, mother, and grandmother, and her family and friends were always of utmost importance to her. Her remembrances were frequent; she loved them one and all. Charlie, born in 1959, was handicapped. He stayed at home and Barbara cared for him for 31 years until his passing in 1990. Another star in her crown.
After 63 years of marriage, her precious Elmer joined her boys, Mac and Charlie, in 2011.
Barbara Jo Ross Adkins was born March 24, 1928, in West Fork, Arkansas, from the union of Roy Preston Ross, Sr. and Alice May Ford Ross. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elmer, sons Mac and Charlie, sister Edwina, and brothers R.D., Mike, Preston, Wallace, Joe, and Freddie. She is survived by sister, Alice Wallace and husband Royce, son Ross Adkins and wife Kay, daughter Jo Louise Adkins, "other daughter" Cherie Ross, and lifelong special friend, Yvonne Devoll. Also survived by grandchildren, Michelle and Kenneth Fickle, Michael and Asaco Adkins, Jessica Adkins, Zachary Adkins, and Claire and Richard Flores; great-grandchildren Derick, Karissa, and Michiah Fickle, Hope, James, and Bear Flores, and great-great-granddaughter, Aurora Rose Compton.
We will treasure her forever. Bye Mama, Grandma, Barbara Jo, Bob, Sister, Aunt, Cousin.
We love those stars in your crown.
Please, in lieu of flowers, consider a donation to Hayrick Cemetery Association or your favorite charity.
A rose once grew where all could see
Sheltered beside a garden wall
And, as the days passed swiftly by
It spread its branches, straight and tall.
One day a beam of light shown through a
crevice that had opened wide –
The rose bent gently toward its warmth
Then passed beyond to the other side –
Now you who deeply feel its loss
Be comforted – the rose blooms there
Its beauty even greater now
Nurtured by God's own loving care.
................
Those we love don't go away
They walk beside us every day
Unseen, unheard, but always near
Still loved, still missed and very dear.
