On Tuesday, April 23, 2024, Anna Jo Samter Carr, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away at the age of 86.
Anna Jo was born on October 10, 1937, in Tulsa, OK to David and Ruby Samter. After graduating from Central High School where she was the President of the Student Council and her Senior class, she went on to The University of Oklahoma where she received a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics in 1959. She was a very proud member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After graduation Anna Jo moved to Houston and went to work for Proctor and Gamble where she was a product tester/demonstrator at various events and tradeshows.
She met the love of her life Valdie (Bud) Carr, Jr. on her very first day in Houston. The evening started out with each of them on a separate blind date and by the time the sun rose on Galveston Bay the next morning they were together forever. They were married on May 21, 1960, and lived in Houston. Bud's job took them to Dallas where their three oldest children were born. He was then transferred to Houston where the twins were born. After a brief stint in Maryland, they ended up raising all their children in Lake Highlands when Bud was transferred back to Dallas.
While Anna Jo was busy taking care of the children, she also found time to be a Girl Scout Leader to all four of her daughter's troops and Cub Scout leader for her son's pack. She loved volunteering and was very active at Network of Community Ministries where she achieved the honor of 1,000 volunteer hours. A special place to Anna Jo was FOCAS (Foster Child Advocacy Services). In addition to raising her own children and being a loving aunt to her two nieces and nephew, she also fostered two orphans and brought them into the welcoming arms of her own family. She and Bud supported them in school, at holidays, and into adulthood.
One of her true loves was traveling all over the world where she and Bud loved experiencing other cultures, food, and sightseeing. Their favorite travel destination was the Big Island of Hawaii where they traveled frequently in the winter. She especially enjoyed all the visits from her children and grandchildren over the years. She also loved traveling with her friends, the Cheap Group, to various locations from the Biltmore to Hong Kong. She and Bud were longtime members of First United Methodist Church of Richardson where they were active members of the Apostles Sunday school class. The class had a huge impact on both their lives.
And of course, later in life Anna Jo experienced the great joy of being "Meemaw" to her many grandchildren and great grandchild. She liked to attend all the grandchildren's events and made each one of them feel special.
Anna Jo was predeceased by her family and her grandson Bryce Samter Marshall. Anna Jo is survived by her husband Bud, her five children, their spouses and their children: Jennifer Carr, Anne Marshall and her grandson Hayden and daughter-in-law Aunika, Vicki (Mark) Smith and their sons William and Jake, Julie (Tom) Bateman and their son Ryan and daughter Grayson and Matt (Sherry) Carr and their sons Mason (Taylor), Harrison and Evan.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 16th, 2024, at First United Methodist Church of Richardson at 503 N. Central Expressway, Richardson TX 75080 at 2pm. There will be a reception prior to the service at the Church at 1pm. Flowers may be sent to First United Methodist Church of Richardson. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Network of Community Ministries or the charity of your choice.
